Article Title:Consumption of alcohol and tobacco by dance teachers
Abstract:
Introduction. For dance teachers (DT) it is important to keep the body healthy due to the variable psychological and physical demands in combination with only few facilitating tools. At the same time, a risky behavior in order to compensate for negative stress consequences cannot be ruled out. The aim of this study was to analyze alcohol and cigarette consumption with respect to gender and the variables school graduation, financial income, body mass index (BMI) and injury prevalence. Methods. A total of n=236 (men: n=53, women: n=183) professional DTs participated in the online questionnaire cross-sectional study. Results. The lifetime prevalence varied between substances and was 75.5%(men) and 73.5%(women) for cigarettes and 86.8%(men) and 78.3%(women) for alcohol. More than 97% DTs currently consumed alcohol in the low-risk range per day and 22.6%(men) and 20.2%(women) currently smoked daily. Significant gender-specific differences in consumption behavior were rare. Significant relationships could be observed between BMI and cigarette consumption(women, p=0.02), between injury prevalence and current cigarette consumption(women) and/or first alcohol consumption(men and women). Discussion. Due to the role model function and the associated influence on pupils, it is important to expand the knowledge on substance consumption of DTs and pupils through preventive measures. The consumption of substances should be reduced to a minimum or even completely avoided.
