Article Title:Archives of the Dance (29): Richard Alston Dance Company Archive at the V&A
Abstract:
This article in the Archives of the Dance series looks at the contents of the Richard Alston Dance Company (RADC) Archive and collection THM/627 that documents the company's activities from its foundation in 1994 to its closure in 2020. It is now housed within the Theatre and Performance Collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, where it will become accessible from 2025 at the museum's new research centre, V&A East Storehouse. It covers the creations by Richard Alston and his assistant Martin Lawrance and the contributions of their collaborators on the music and design for productions. It includes 27 actual costumes and photographs of the entire wardrobe for company productions. It comprehensively documents the performances in Britain and overseas and activities by RADC and their outreach work. It also covers administration, marketing and communications including a remarkably complete THM/22 acquired in 2001 which includes some material on RADC as well detailed documentation on London Contemporary Dance Theatre, the previous resident dance company at The Place.
