Article Title:A not so silent communication in the teaching of dance: attending to words in tango classes in Buenos Aires

Abstract:
Bourdieu's claim that sports and dances are acquired through silent, body-to-body communication has often been adopted as the starting point for ethnographic research. As a consequence, anthropologists have assumed that the disciplines of human movement are learned independently from words. The article contributes to recent research in dance anthropology questioning this statement and stressing the methodological convenience of paying attention to words alongside with body movement. Analyzing data obtained through longterm participant observation in tango learning contexts., it argues that paying attention to the language that describes and accompanies movement in dance lessons, throws light on aspects of the transformation of the role of women in dance education which would go unnoticed if we assumed that the dance is transmitted by a silent process.
