Article Title:Music-selling in Boccherini's Madrid

Abstract:
Luigi Boccherini remained for most of his creative life in Madrid, at a court traditionally viewed as peripheral, and in remote places such as Arenas de San Pedro. How this situation determined his musical style, the possibilities of coming into contact with his colleagues' production and the way his works became published are some of the fundamental issues not yet fully assessed. This article focuses on the circumstances in which Boccherini's first works were published by Jose Fernando Palomino (Madrid), Jean Baptiste Venier (Paris) and Luigi Marescalchi (Venice) in the 1770s, and how they were for sale in Madrid soon after. It also presents a preliminary overview of the music-selling market in late 18th- and very early 19th-century Madrid. Local periodicals, the Gaceta de Madrid and the Diario de Madrid, reflect the thriving commercial activity of several music sellers (Miguel Copin, Antonio Sancha and Antonio de Castillo), showing Madrid's involvement in the international music trade. This kind of approach may pave the way to encourage the assessment of the reception in Madrid of imported repertory and its influence on native composers.
