Article Title:The OMITRON and MODEL OMITRON high field tokamak design philosophy

Abstract:
In this paper the main features of the OMITRON and MODEL OMITRON proposed high field tokamak experiments are illustrated. Of the two, OMITRON is an ambitious device aimed at D-T ignition and beyond that at gathering some first experimental information of interest for the possible future conquering of the D-He-3 burning goal. MODEL OMITRON is instead a small, propaedeutical device, having the main purpose of testing key engineering issues in vivo, which are vital for the larger and more expensive parent device. Chief asset (but also chief challenge) for both the OMITRON and MODEL OMITRON devices is the conspicuous 20 Tesla toroidal field value designed to be achieved on the plasma axis in a 3.5 aspect ratio configuration. The advanced features of engineering which consent such an achievement in terms of toroidal magnet performance are discussed in convenient depth and detail. The rewards expected from operating the larger machine being in a way obvious, a scoping study is presented for the smaller machine, suggesting that the latter too is capable of a number of interesting physics investigations in its own right.
