Article Title:'First Mass in Brazil' revisited on the 500th anniversary

Abstract:
The text discusses Victor Meirelles's painting 'Primeira Missa' as an illustration alluding to Brazil's European discovery and one of the country's most important icons for its role in shaping the imaginary of our national history. A methodological interpretation of the painting's composition is carried out, with the aim of extracting meaning from its form. This interpretation is supported by the analysis of essential questions regarding visual artistic language - such as drawing, composition and painting - in which relevant, discursive aspects of the painting are highlighted, taking into account the circumstances of the work's production and exhibition.
