Article Title:Did early man reach Java during the Late Pliocene?

Abstract:
Homo erectus (Pithecanthropus) reached Java from the Asian continent and became one of the oldest islanders in the world. This article deals with the palaeomagnetic and (40)AR/(40)AR dating of the 'lower lahar', a layer located at the base of the fossil-bearing series of the Sangiran dome. combined, (40)AR/(39)AR and palaeomagnetic data show that the deposition of the lower lahar, marking the emergence of the first dryland at Sangiran, took place at the end and just after the Olduvai subchron. Therefore c 1.7 million years can be considered as a maximal theoretical age for the arrival of the first hominids at Sangiran.
