Three decades of research into the equivalency of traditional and automated assessments have culminated in the growing popularity of Internet-based surveys. This article briefly reviews the history of computerized assessment and compares and contrasts it to the current research on Internet-based surveying. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
