Article Title:Schools, society, and school psychologists - History and future directions

Abstract:
If school psychologists are to become more effective in modern schools, the must become more successful in working proactively with students and teachers in the everyday activities that constitute school life. School psychologists have advocated for this goal for over 2 decades but it has yet to be realized. In addition to the historical barriers that hal e limited progress toward this goal, the role of modern school psychologists must also accommodate evolving and, at times, conflicting changes in theoretical and popular conceptions of the purposes of schooling and how students learn. This article briefly discusses the history of school psychology and suggests ways school psychologists might transform their historically defined roles through educational training, assessment practices, advocacy based on parents' and citizens views of the purposes of schooling, and changes in how school psychologists are utilized in the schools.
